Eightlegged Live Chat

Answer your website's visitors from your phone.

A chat box on your website, and an app that rings when someone uses it. Built and run by us in Scarborough, for about half what Pure Chat charges.

  • A visitor starts a chat and your phone rings, then rings again every 30 seconds until somebody answers.
  • The whole team gets the alert. The first to tap Accept has the chat; everyone else sees it's taken.
  • Set yourself Away and the website offers a leave-a-message form instead, emailed straight to you.
  • One line on your website. If we look after your site, we put it there for you.

Eightlegged Chat

The app

Eightlegged Chat, for Android phones. Sign in with your Eightlegged portal login and you're answering chats a minute later.

Available or Away

One switch. Available means new chats ring your phone. Away means they don't, and the website offers visitors a message form instead.

Everything about the visitor

The page they started on, the pages they've looked at since, their email if they gave it, and how many times they've chatted before.

Replies that don't get lost

Messages appear as soon as you send them and are delivered when the connection comes back. Typing dots both ways.

Photos

Visitors can send a photo of the thing they're asking about, and you can send one back from the camera or your gallery.

Saved replies

Your stock answers sit above the keyboard. Tap one, change a word if you need to, send.

Pass it on

Transfer a chat to a colleague or back to the queue, and close it with an outcome: sale, enquiry, support, spam.

History

Every chat since day one. Search by name, email, or anything either side said, and filter by date, website or result.

Transcripts

Send the whole conversation, with times, to email, notes or a printer from your phone's share button.

Reliability first

What the other chat apps get wrong

We read the reviews of Pure Chat, tawk.to and Tidio before building ours. The same few complaints come up every time, and none of them is about missing features.

Alerts that arrive late, or only when the app is open.

Ours are sent by our server through Google's and Apple's own notification services, which wake a locked phone. If nobody accepts, the phone is told again every 30 seconds.

Being signed out in the middle of a chat.

You stay signed in. The app signs you out only if you sign out, change your password, or are taken off the team.

Stuck on “reconnecting”.

When you open the app it fetches everything fresh from the server rather than waiting on an old connection, so the list and the conversation are always whole.

Notifications that go quiet without anyone noticing.

Settings has a Send a test notification button. It sends a real one through the whole chain, and if it can't, it tells you why.

For the owner

Run your own team

Whoever owns the account manages it from their phone. No support ticket, no waiting for us.

  • Add a member of staff by name and email. They get an email with a password link and the app.
  • Make someone an owner, or switch them off when they leave.
  • Choose who answers which website, if you have more than one.
  • Change what visitors see: your name, greeting and colour, how long a visitor waits before being offered the message form, and where missed chats are emailed.
  • Put a colleague on Away when they've forgotten.

Your website

On your website

One line, just before the end of every page. It works on any website that lets you add a script.

<script src="https://chat.eightlegged.com/widget.js" data-key="YOUR-KEY" async></script>
  • A chat bubble in your colours sits in the corner of every page. On a phone the chat opens full screen.
  • Your key only works on your own website, so a copied line is no use to anyone else.
  • Nothing for visitors to download or sign up to.
  • If we look after your website, we add the line and test it for you.
The chat open on Eightlegged's own contact page: our name, Online now, a greeting, and a short form to start a chat.
The chat on our own contact page, as a visitor sees it.

Questions

Is there an iPhone app?

It's on its way. Until then, iPhone users open chat.eightlegged.com in Safari, choose Add to Home Screen and allow notifications. It's the same chat, with alerts.

What happens if nobody's available?

Visitors see a short form to leave their name, email and message, and it's emailed to you. If someone starts a chat and nobody accepts it in time (90 seconds unless you change it), they're offered the same form and the chat is emailed to you too.

Can more than one person answer?

Yes, as many as you like. Everyone who's Available gets the alert, and the first to tap Accept has the chat.

Is there a robot answering for us?

No. Every reply comes from a person on your team.

Where are the chats kept?

On our own servers, not a third party's. Photos visitors send have their location and camera details removed. Our privacy page has the details.

Can we move over from Pure Chat?

Yes. We swap the line on your website, set your team up, and you're answering chats on the new app the same day. If we look after your website, we do the swap for you.

How do we get started?

Get in touch. We'll switch it on for your website, add your first owner, and you add the rest of your team from the app.

Try it now

The chat bubble on this page is Eightlegged Live Chat. Ask it anything and you'll be talking to us. Or get in touch and we'll set it up on your website.
